In-Between Worlds

Hanns Eisler and the years of upheaval 1918–38–48

Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien, Institut für Musikwissenschaft und Interpretationsforschung, June 1–3 2018

This symposium takes as its starting point Hanns Eisler’s 120th birthday in 2018, focusing on three other historically important years – each of them ending in an “8” – that also signified moments of upheaval in the composer’s biography as both man and artist.

1918:  The end of the monarchies and of the war – the end of Eisler’s military service and a fresh artistic start in a new world in which the New Viennese School was prominent.
1938:  The annexation – Anschluss – of Austria by the German Reich, Eisler’s departure for the New World, his American exile.
1948:  Eisler’s return from exile, his new start in the ruins of the Old World.

The languages are German and English.
