After two years as a common soldier in the first world war, he became a student of Arnold Schoenberg in 1919, dedicating his <em>Sonata for Piano<\/em> op. 1 to his teacher in 1923. He moved to Berlin 1925, where he composed for workers\u2019 choruses and agitprop groups, collaborating with Brecht (<em>Die Ma\u00dfnahme<\/em>, <em>Die Mutter<\/em>) from 1928. From 1933, Eisler initially resided in Paris, Svendborg, and London, before taking exile in America from 1938, where he created his most significant chamber music works (<em>including Fourteen Ways to Describe Rain<\/em>). Alongside music for eight Hollywood pictures, Eisler also composed his <em>Hollywood Songbook<\/em> to texts by Brecht, H\u00f6lderlin, and others while in California.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-9fd4b43\" data-id=\"9fd4b43\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-67e2b63 line-height-30 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"67e2b63\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In 1948, Eisler returned to Europe, initially to Vienna and Prague and ultimately to East Berlin. Although he wrote the <em>National Anthem of the GDR<\/em> to a text by Johannes R. Becher, conflict arose with GDR cultural bureaucracy when he published his libretto <em>Johann Faustus<\/em> in late 1952. Up until 1955, Eisler predominantly worked in Vienna for the Scala Vienna and Vienna Film at Rosenh\u00fcgel. In the GDR, he wrote works for the Berliner Ensemble and DEFA. In 1959, he witnessed the premiere of his <em>Deutsche Symphonie,<\/em> mostly composed while in exile, at the State Opera Unter den Linden. Attempts to detect the \u2018real Eisler\u2019 in one specific musical style or only in particular works will therefore \u2013 necessarily \u2013 miss the point.<\/p><p>Towards the end of the 1920s Eisler distanced himself from the aesthetic of \u2018art for art\u2019s sake\u2019 and subordinated his musical works to social goals. As a Marxist he saw these goals in the class struggle, in the interests of the proletariat, and in the construction and safeguarding of a socialist, and ultimately communist, society. Eisler considered adapting the musical means to such goals, and indeed the discovering of these means in the first place, as his foremost compositional priority.<\/p><p>Eisler\u2019s societal aspirations and the musical solutions he devised are, more than anything else, responsible for his position in the history of twentieth century music under the umbrella of \u2018political music\u2019. Ironically, however, those who took up the political cause which Eisler advocated often approached him with an all too narrow conception of his work. If he was valued above all as the composer of influential mass music in the late 1920s and early 1930s, as a kindred spirit of Brecht, and as the musical originator of the National Anthem of the GDR and other vocal works with texts by Johannes R. Becher \u2013 and was for the same reasons denigrated by his critics \u2013 he was just as often the victim of attempts to subject exemplary works to aesthetic categories such as \u2018realism\u2019 or \u2018anti-formalism\u2019, these being categories which Eisler sceptically opposed as doctrinaire and whose unproblematic applicability to music he doubted. It was for this reason that, during his lifetime, a considerable part of Eisler\u2019s compositional achievement had already sunk into obscurity. September 1962 in Berlin, Komponist. \u2013 Eisler, Sohn des Philosophen Rudolf Eisler (1873-1926), wuchs seit 1901 in Wien auf [\u2026] 1916 wurde er zum Kriegsdienst eingezogen; aus der Kriegszeit (1917) stammen auch die ersten erhaltenen Kompositionen. 1919 begann er am Neuen Wiener Kons. bei K. Weigl Kontrapunkt zu studieren, wechselte aber noch im selben Jahr zum Privatunterricht bei A. Sch\u00f6nberg, dessen Sch\u00fcler (w\u00e4hrend des Sommers 1922 auch der von A. Webern) er bis zum Fr\u00fchjahr 1923 blieb. Im Apr. desselben Jahres wurde im Prager <em>Verein f\u00fcr musikalische Privatauff\u00fchrungen<\/em> seine Sonate f\u00fcr Klavier op. 1 durch E. Brecht, zu dessen Lehrst\u00fcck <em>Die Ma\u00dfnahme<\/em>, der Gorkij-Adaption <em>Die Mutter<\/em> und dem Film <em>Kuhle Wampe oder: Wem geh\u00f6rt die Welt?<\/em> Eisler jeweils die Musik beisteuerte.<\/p><p>Nach der \u2018Machtergreifung\u2018 der Nationalsozialisten 1933 hielt sich Eisler abwechselnd in \u00d6sterreich, Frankreich, D\u00e4nemark, England, Spanien, der Tschechoslowakei und der Sowjetunion auf. 1935 unternahm Eisler auch erste Reisen in die USA: Von Okt. 1935 bis Fr\u00fchjahr 1936 unterrichtete er in New York an der New School for Social Research. 1936 kehrte Eisler zun\u00e4chst nach Europa zur\u00fcck, ging aber im Jan. 1938 wieder in die USA, wo er erneut an der New School unterrichtete. Am Kons. von Mexiko Stadt \u2013 Visaprobleme zwangen ihn zwischenzeitlich nach Mexiko auszureisen \u2013 hielt er von Apr. bis Aug. 1939 einige Kurse. 1940 erhielt Eisler von der <em>Rockefeller Foundation<\/em> Mittel zur Durchf\u00fchrung eines zweij\u00e4hrigen Filmmusikprojektes (\u201c<em>Research Program on the Relation between Music and Films<\/em>\u201d) an der New School. 1942 siedelte Eisler von New York nach Hollywood \u00fcber, wo er als Filmmusik-Komponist Fu\u00df fa\u00dfte. 1943 wurde die Musik zu <em>Hangmen Also Die<\/em>, 1944 die zu <em>None but the Lonely Heart<\/em> f\u00fcr den <em>Oscar<\/em> der Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominiert. [\u2026]<\/p><p>1947 wurde Eisler vom <em>House Committee on un-American Activities<\/em> in Washington verh\u00f6rt und schlie\u00dflich 1948 unter zahlreichen Protesten (u.a. von L. Bernstein, Ch. Chaplin, A. Copland, A. Einstein, Th. Mann und I. Stravinskij) aus den USA ausgewiesen. Eisler gelangte Ende M\u00e4rz 1948 \u00fcber London und Prag nach Wien. 1949 siedelte er nach Berlin(Ost) \u00fcber. Seine Vertonung eines Gedichtes von Johannes R. Becher (\u201c<em>Auferstanden aus Ruinen<\/em>\u201d) wurde zur Nationalhymne der neugegr\u00fcndeten DDR. 1950 erhielt er am Staatlichen Kons.
